Dr. Manuel Amirthavasagam Thangaraj and Mrs. Mary Monica Coelho Thangaraj had faced difficulties for caring and developing their second son Suresh Bernard who was a intellectually disabled child. Experiencing the problems personally made them realize the mental and physical agonies of such parents and they founded Anbagam Special School in Madurai in 1970, a first of its kind in South Tamil Nadu. Training them in self-help, educating in non-formal mode and preparing them for an appropriate vocation are the mission. Started with 7 children in a rented building, Anbagam has grown into a great institutional complex under their guidance and philosophy with the help of friends near and far.
